Harriet SmithMany of my friends thought I was crazy! Leave a steady job to build clay vessels? Give yourself the chance...
Susan C. Balentine
Media: ClaySusan's joy in creating with her hands was instilled at an early age by her artistic mother, from whom she learned the value and love that goes into handmade items.
Her functional individually thrown pottery is hand-painted with a wax resist in nature inspired designs. She uses white stoneware clay, which is fired to 2300 degrees F. in a reduction gas kiln. Overlapping glazes produce surfaces rich in color and depth. Susan feels that beauty is a gift that nature gives us every day. With her pottery she strives to combine comfort of use with beauty in everyday life. “I have always had a love for drawing and painting. There is excitement as well as a challenge to painting designs on 3-D surfaces. I love to wrap my designs around the pottery forms.” Studio visits welcome by appointment.
