Rodger E. JacobsI am a member of the baby boom generation. I was born in Durham, North Carolina in 1946. My dad...
I live in a world of fiber! Fabric is my canvas as I "paint" with thread--guiding the needle of a machine to "sketch" complex details onto the work. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind, original design giving reference to the elements of nature.
For as long as I can remember I watched the women in my life create, mostly in the form of hand quilting, crocheting, and sewing garments. Through the years I experienced other media, but find myself most comfortable in the tactile world of cloth - just like the women before me.
My inspiration lies in the natural world surrounding me - from the warmth of the Florida coast to, mainly, the changing mountain ranges outside my window. Those fine details in nature often find a specific place in my work.
Technically, I design small quilts, but the traditional ideas of quilting take on a unique form. No patterns, programed stitches, or pencil marks are applied to the fabric - even cutting is done free hand. Most of the small "art quilts" are embellished with hand embroidery, bead-work, or paint.
I am proud to be a self-taught artist, learning most of what I know from books, classes and my "fabric friends".
Hopefully, you will enjoy the richness of fiber and intricate details within the study of my work!
