Tree of Life Shield: This clay piece is 20" in diameter, and depicts a spiraling white oak tree. The stars below the roots are of the night sky at the Summer Solstice. The night sky surrounding the edge of the shield sets off this piece beautifully. It is painted with colored clays (terra sigillata), then sgraffitoed (scratching through to the color below),fired for strength, fired again for the smokey effect in hemlock boughs, surfaced with a tile sealer, and mounted on wood for hanging. Each piece is one of a kind. $1800
