Penland Sunset: Dyed, printed, marbled silk and cotton 12x28 $775 Photo By: Tim Barnwell
About this Gallery: These wall hangings were in the Focus Gallery at the Folk Art Center November 2011 through January 10, 2012.
Some of these wall hangings were inspired by photographs I took from the Blue Ridge Parkway, on a trip to Cumberland Gap, exploring Linville Gorge, while taking classes at Penland School of Crafts, and near my home in Yancey County. The mountain views are difficult to replicate as magnificent as they loom. Watching the colors change through the seasons and as the sun moves through the sky each day inspire awe and beg to be depicted in a format to be hung on the wall. Each morning this summer I awoke to a fresh day lily bloom and photographed the variety of colors, sizes and shapes. I knew I had to make a wall hanging to keep that fleeting image more permanent. Luna moths appear each year at Penland and invariably perch on a door or bench as if asking to be photographed. Their ethereal beauty astounds me and led to their own hangings. |
