I grew up sleeping under quilts made by my grandmother and filled with cotton grown by my grandfather. That comfort stays with me always. In my home, I am surrounded by quilts from my family, and also from my travels in foreign countries.
I learned to quilt using time-honored traditions from women of the Southern Appalachians. Today, my bed quilts and fiber art are influenced by the strong geometric patterns of traditional quilts, but I bend the rules to give a more contemporary expression.
I see quilt patterns in everything...nature, architecture, and even in my dreams! Personal experiences and my Appalachian environment provide inspiration for most of my work. I have been teaching quilting since 1991. My favorite students are beginners. If they can acquire a good foundation of techniques, they can go anywhere with their personal creativity and artistry.
