The Southern Highland Craft Guild Presents the 2026 Graduating Class of Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Program

Southern Highland Craft Guild is proud to present The Graduating Class of 2026 from Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Program in a dynamic new exhibition at the Folk Art Center.

Opening May 9, 2026, and on view through August 19, 2026, this highly anticipated exhibition showcases the work of emerging artists as they complete their journey through one of the region’s most respected craft programs. Located in the upstairs Main Gallery, the exhibition celebrates the enduring partnership between the Guild and Haywood Community College, an institution long recognized as a leader in craft education.

The exhibition features work from students trained across multiple disciplines, including fiber, wood, clay, and metals & jewelry. Under the guidance of expert instructors, these artists have developed distinct voices and refined technical skills, resulting in a diverse and compelling body of work. Each graduate brings a unique perspective, reflecting both personal vision and a deep connection to the rich craft traditions of the Southern Highlands.

The Professional Crafts Program is known for its rigorous, hands-on curriculum, which integrates traditional craft techniques with contemporary design, business practices, marketing, and photography. This holistic approach ensures graduates are well-prepared to pursue sustainable careers as professional makers.

Reflecting on the significance of the annual Graduate Show, faculty member Brian Wurst shares:
“For nearly five decades, our programs have flourished, in part due to our strong relationship with the Southern Highland Craft Guild. This exhibition represents the culmination of two years of dedication and growth. We are proud to see our students’ work presented in such an inspiring space, and many of our alumni continue their journey as active Guild members.”

Since its founding in 1974 with the establishment of the clay studio, the Professional Crafts Program has expanded to include wood, fiber, and jewelry, cultivating generations of skilled artisans. Today, it remains a vital contributor to the region’s vibrant craft heritage.

The Graduating Class of 2026 exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience the creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation of the next generation of makers at a pivotal moment in their artistic careers.
