Studio potter in Western North Carolina since 1975 and Guild member in clay since 1979. David creates decorative and functional porcelain and stoneware pottery using both wheel forming and slab construction. He fires his pottery in electric kilns, a wood-fired kiln or a gas reduction kiln. David and his wife, jeweler and Guild member Molly Sharp share a studio at their home in Zirconia, NC.
Drawing on a childhood joy of making almost anything with my hands, I knew clay to be my calling the first time I touched it on a turning pottery wheel. My pots evolved slowly as I earned my skills (being mostly self taught) and soon added a painter's touch, my other love and the legacy of my parents, both professional painters. The introduction to porcelain provided a key element in the development of my current body of work, a marriage of classically simple wheel thrown forms, subtle and colorful floral brush decorations, high fired to a luminous finish known only to porcelain. An interest in wood firing led to building his own kiln that he fires several times a year with guest artists. A form of salt glazing (soda) is done at the end of each firing to give the pottery a unique and unpredictable finish. I hope owning my pottery will bring as much joy as I have had creating it.
