I am very proud to be a Sothern Highland Craft Guild Fiber Artist

Magggie Valley
NC

I am extremely proud to be a member of the Southern Highland craft Guild and have been able to incorporate my love of sewing and creating unique and beautiful wearable art. I am a fiber artist and create natural fiber garments and paintings using needle felting and wet felting techniques. I also work with eco-print/botanical printing to capture the essence of the natural beauty that surrounds us here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I am a self-taught artist with no formal schooling. In 2017, I discovered the art and medium of wet felting. Videos, books, and many failed attempts helped me to learn the basic technique of layering the wool and wet felting, since have created my own style of felting in added details as well as embellishments. I enjoy working with fine fiber like alpaca and silks, adding texture and color to accentuate each piece. I describe my dry/needle felted work as “painting” with fibers.

Felting, both wet and dry/needle has opened up a whole new avenue of inspiration and passion in my creative life and it is the artistic medium that feeds my creative soul. The whole process is very time consuming and challenging, but always exciting as sometimes just the smallest change in color or texture can make a huge difference in the essence of the final work.

I love the natural world, and am inspired daily by the beauty of these Blue Ridge Mountains where I live. The change of seasons prompted me to explore eco-printing/botanical work on fiber and creates the opportunity to gather native plants and “print” them on silk and other fibers often dyed with natural pigments. Once again, this is a multi-step and laborious process necessary to create unique works of art made entirely by hand and inspired by nature.

My appreciation of fine fiber, art, experience, and continuing to learn help me to add depth and dimension to my work and I am constantly amazed at the beauty of what can be created by inspiration and an eye for detail.

It is my fondest wish that others may explore and appreciate the beauty of nature through my work.
