Large Platter with Slip Decoration

Large platter with slip decoration.  Artist Jon Arsenault fires his wheel-thrown pieces to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln.  During the firing process, the kiln is starved of oxygen at certain times, which places the kiln in a “reducing” atmosphere. At this point, the fire pulls oxides from the clay body and the glaze, changing the chemical makeup and therefore the color. At cone 10 or approximately 2400 degrees, many of the colors produced are earth tones. Jon uses a porcelain slip to create a white background for his translucent glazes.
